Cam Newton Signs With Gatorade

February 28, 2012

Newton has developed quite a resume for a 22-year-old. After winning the Heisman Trophy at Auburn, Newton won Sporting News Rookie of the Year and a trip to the Pro Bowl following his dynamic first season. As for endorsements, he now has deals with Gatorade, Under Armour and GMC.

In a phone interview with Sporting News, Newton—who is in Indianapolis for Super Bowl week—talked about his latest venture, what’s next for him and the Panthers and his Super Bowl pick.

Q: So, you’re the newest member of the Gatorade family?

A: Absolutely, and I’m extremely ecstatic right now. Especially with my history of being an athlete and having Gatorade as something that I put in my body at a young age to now being part of the family means the world.

Q: Now, you made waves at Auburn with your secret drink that was labeled Cammy Cam Juice. CBS' Tracy Wolfson even tasted it on the sideline during a game. Time to fess up. Was it really Gatorade?

A: I'm not sure, man. I'm not sure. Just stay tuned and there ain't no telling what you might find out about the juice. Cammy Cam juice is the secret of champions.

Q: You just finished your first NFL season with a trip to the Pro Bowl. What do you do in the next month?

A: I'm watching film of myself, watching film of my opponents, things that I think I could have done better. I'm just doing that day to day. I carry around all my season on DVDs, so I watch it in and out of flights. And just staying fit. One of the things I wanted to focus on this offseason and what Gatorade is going to be a big contributor of is putting the right things in my body. I'm trying to lose a couple pounds because a lot of times this year I felt kind of sluggish because I put on so much weight from the time that I was at Auburn to my time at Carolina. So I'm trying to get back down to that weight I feel very comfortable at and do damage at.

Q: What are your goals for next season with the Panthers?

A: If the Carolina Panthers aren't in the playoffs next season, I feel like, one, I failed myself and also the veterans we have on this team. The injury bug hit the team very early this season, which slighted us of so much of our leadership and talent that we were kind of thrown a (curve) early in the season. But with everybody healthy, the sky is the limit for this team. I'm able to say that I'm very comfortable in Carolina, making Charlotte my home. The fan support is great. Everybody around that state is in buzz of what the potential is for the Carolina Panthers. One thing that we wanted to change—from the fans to the players to the co-workers and whoever was a part of the Carolina Panthers—is that they would have that mentality of winning.

Q: You glad Steve Smith stayed?

A: Absolutely, absolutely. I don't think he gets enough credit for my success. I've been hearing the buzz of "Cam Newton reviving Steve Smith's career," but I think Smitty has started mine on the right track. Steve does for this team so much that goes unnoticed as far as leadership—he's an excellent father figure to so many people. He does things the right way from treating his body the right way, working out the right way, just having that game-breaking mentality on and off the field.

Q: You’ve been spotted courtside at Charlotte Bobcats games. Anything you can do to help them out?

A: I don't know, man. I'm a big Bobcats fan. I'm pretty sure that MJ (Michael Jordan) has something up his sleeves as far as the upcoming years. I'm still rooting for them, no matter what the record is. I just like seeing those guys go out there and play to the end.

Q: Giants or Patriots?

A: Honestly, I'm straddling the fence. There are so many things you can point and nitpick as far as what sets these teams apart. One thing that everybody knows is you have two elite quarterbacks that are primed to go in the clutch. When the game is on the line, that's when they’re playing their best and everybody knows that. ...The defense on each side and offense on each side are pretty solid, and it's going to be a fun game to watch. My thing is to try to find a way... how to make the Carolina Panthers be in this game next year and the years to come.
